Neal was resting on the hard floor when he felt the tiny weight of Jeremiah against his side. Instead of growling or moving away, the older puppy seemed to understand the gravity of their situation. Jeremiah climbed onto Neal’s back, tucking his small head against Neal’s fur, and for the first time in days, he stopped shaking.

The scene was so poignant that it stopped the shelter staff in their tracks. It was a silent conversation of “I’m here, and I won’t let you go.” They were two souls who had been discarded by the world, finding the only warmth available in each other. They didn’t know it was supposed to be their last night on earth.
Because the shelter was at maximum capacity, both Jeremiah and Neal had already been added to the euthanasia list for the following morning. Their “meeting” was essentially a final goodbye before it had even begun. But fate—and a quick-thinking worker with a smartphone—had other plans.
The worker snapped a photo of the two puppies huddled together and immediately sent it to Sylvia Silverstein, a well-known animal rescuer. Sylvia was used to heartbreaking cases, but the image of the sick puppy seeking refuge on the back of another stranger hit her like a physical blow. She didn’t hesitate.
